Nephrology

The department of Nephrology takes care of patients with kidney problems. Patients with complaints relating to kidney function are referred to the department. After an initial assessment, the treating nephrologist orders appropriate diagnostic tests such as blood tests, urine tests, ultrasonography, kidney biopsy etc. Based on the test results a diagnosis is made and appropriate care/treatment is given or advised.

Nephrologists work closely with other specialists, including cardiologists, endocrinologists, pharmacists, nurses,  and dietitians to deliver high-quality, cost-effective care to patients who suffer from problems involving the kidneys, uncontrolled hypertension or complex blood pressure issues.

Dialysis

While many kidney problems can be treated by medication, diet and life style changes, in some patients the extent of kidney damage may be too severe to allow any improvement through medicines alone. In such cases the treating nephrologist would advise the patient to opt for renal replacement therapy to replace the function of the failing kidneys, namely – hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis or renal transplantation. The advantages and disadvantages of each dialysis modality are discussed in detail with the patient and his/her family by the nurse educator and the treating nephrologist before a final decision is made.

Hemodialysis

In hemodialysis, the patient is connected to a dialysis machine (either through a dialysis catheter inserted into a neck or leg vein or through an AV fistula) and the patient’s blood, after removal of waste products by the machine, is returned back to the patient. Thus, these machines are actually artificial kidneys.  Our nephrology department has a dialysis unit which presently houses 11 hemodialysis machines, 1 of which is exclusively used for ICU dialysis. Dialysis is done by trained hemodialysis therapists along with nursing staff under the supervision of a consultant nephrologist.

Comprehensive services for nephrology outpatient and inpatient care are provided.

The nephrology department takes pride in being one the largest dialysis center in private sector in the region. There are 11 state of the art dialysis machines, with fully automatic water treatment plant. All the beds have central oxygen line and monitors attached to them.

We use Nipro Dialyzers in ours departments. The Nipro dialyzers are designed and manufactured in such a way that patients undergoing Hemo dialysis do not suffer while the procedure is in course. We ensure that patients go through a painless and gentle dialysis procedure. The dialyzers are made with the patients care in mind and hence would not cause any harm with respect to infections. They are made using Gamma sterilization techniques and hence are absolutely safe for use. The design is such that no blood would remain in the dialyzer after the dialysis procedure is complete. They ensure that the removal of waste products like creatinine and urea, from the patient’s body is done with success. Hemo Dialyzers are a well known product of the Brand Nipro.
